INTESTINAL OBSTRUCTION

Abstract
Intestinal obstruction is one of the most common and dangerous surgical emergencies.
The mortality rate is still high, although it has fallen from the 60% of 4 decades ago to approximately 10% (5^20%), when all types of obstruction are considered. Four factors are responsible for the lower mortality rate:
¢ç intestinal decompression.
? increased understanding of the fluid and electrolytes problems
? use of antibiotics.
? improved early surgical treatment.
Diagnosis and treatment of intestinal obstruction (mechanical, paralytic and vascular) were briefly discussed and literature was reviewed.
